Which Search Engines Rule?

Free traffic to their website is everyone's dream and since the majority of the traffic comes from the first 3 pages of major web directories and search engines, competition to get on those pages is intense.

So which is the most important search engine to be listed with? According to Search Engine Watch, it is Google, with a market share of 42.7% (up from 35% last year). Google's increase has been at the expense of both MSN and Yahoo which both declined during that period.

What has made Google so popular? Relevance. When you search with Google you find relevant matches to your search. This is because Google relies on a system which is very difficult for spammers to cheat - that of link popularity.

After looking at the relevance of pages to the keywords - particularly the content, Google then counts links from other sites, ranking the most popular website at the top and so on.

Google is very open about how they rank sites, what you can do to increase your ranking and what they will blacklist a site for - And it is simply amazing the number of Webmasters who use outdated techniques which can actually result in their clients websites being blacklisted from Google.

Australian Business Productions can help you with your search engine rank. For more information, a free evaluation of your site, or a chat about some strategies you can put in place to improve your website's ranking, fill out this form and we'll be in touch.

Where Do Search Engines Get Their Results?

Here are some diagrams to show which search engines are supplied by Google and the Open Directory.

This diagram shows Google supplies three other engines with results from its patented 'PageRank' search engine: AOL, Netscape and iwon.

Google paid 'Adwords' results are supplied to the five search engines in this diagram(as well as appearing on the right hand side of Google searches.

The Open Directory (dmoz) supplies five search engines including Google with results from its listings. This is a very important directory, but very slow to get websites listed in as all websites are reviewed by volunteers
